There’s one thing people tend to avoid talking about when it comes to RV life – laundry and the crazy amount of smelly and sweaty clothes that can accumulate. The smelliest and sweatiest days of RV life are travel days, which is why we now actually plan our road trip outfits. This planning led us to finally find the most comfortable travel clothing brand that’s sweat wicking and odor resistant: Unbound Merino.
The best travel outfits for long flights and road trips should be sweat wicking, breathable, wrinkle-free, odor-resistant, and comfortable. The goal is be able to wear your road trip outfit again without the need to wash it.
Tips for planning your road trip outfits and comfortable travel clothing:
- Choose your outfit color by your body temperature – wear light colors if you tend to be hot and dark colors if you run cold
- Dress in layers by having a sweatshirt or long sleeved shirt easily accessible with your base layer an odor-resistant and sweat-wicking T-shirt or tank
- Wear breathable shoes that don’t restrict blood circulation (if you wear sandals, have a pair of socks handy for cold toes)
- We recommend odor-resistant socks and athletic shoes if you’re the driver during your road trip
- Opt out of skin-tight clothing and spandex materials – these trap in your sweat and stink, which can cause irritation in your underarms and under-the-belt area
- Pick undergarments that breath and offer more coverage
- When traveling with A/C or in cold temperatures, wear breathable pants to keep your body temperature regulated
- Add UV protection to your road trip outfits with UV-resistant sunglasses, clothing, or a mineral sunscreen – this is a good everyday tip for driving, but long road trips expose you to even more harmful UV rays
Where can I find the best road trip outfits?
Our favorite road trip and travel day clothing is from Unbound Merino. The clothing is extremely soft and breathable, and most importantly for us…. it’s odor resistant. TRUST US when we say that we’ve put their odor-resistant claims to the test.
Mike and I have been sharing the same Unbound Merino clothing items (that’s right, I was willing to wear Mike’s clothes post-drive and workout) for about a month now to really do the test.
I sleep, hike, bike, and drive in our sweats & T-shirt and have yet to wash them. The shirt is super soft and lightweight, which is perfect for sleeping while the pants are durable and breathable, ideal for our road trip outfits and cooler-day workouts.
We personally hadn’t owned any Merino wool clothing before, so we were pleasantly surprised by the comfort and durability. The Merino wool is especially nice for the varying temperatures we’ve been in over the past month. In Colorado, the highs were mid 90s to low 50s and in New Mexico, lows ranged from 40s to 60s.
Here’s a funny clip we saw during our first week of testing Unbound Merino as a true testament to Merino wool:
A quick note on sizing: all clothing featured is size XL men’s. The shirts have a more slim fit than a standard T-shirt size, which is depicted in their online shop. The XL sweats fit me (and my booty) very well, and we’ll be testing out the new women’s line soon!
