We usually travel together, but sometimes we have our own adventures as well. But one summer weekend, we both set off on our own adventures – Taylor headed south of the border to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico (blog to come soon), while I headed north towards Flagstaff, Arizona for a weekend of golf with some friends. While a lot of locals know about Munds Park, it’s not as common of a destination for out-of-staters… This blog is to let you know why this small town should be on your radar.
If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you know by now that golf is key to our lifestyle. Taylor chooses our travel destinations for the best snorkel spots, and I choose them based on which golf courses are nearby. So, when my father-in-law asked if I would want to spend the weekend golfing with 7 of our friends… the answer was an obvious yes.
Munds Park, Arizona is about 30 minutes south of Flagstaff and 2 hours north of Scottsdale. It’s an easy drive that flies by when you’re ready to escape the heat. With a population of less than 14,000, it has a great small town feel. More importantly, due to its elevation of 6,500 ft, it stays nice and cool in the summer. This makes golfing in Munds Park way better than the 100+ degree weather down in the Valley.
The local golf course, Pinewood Country Club, is a semi-private course that is fun to play at for all levels (we’ve taken everyone from Taylor’s 11-year-old sister to competitive golfers). Make sure to check out their twilight pricing because you’ll pay a hefty fee for a morning tee time during the summer months. For this weekend in particular, planning in advance was critical since we had a group of 8 of us coming up.
After the first golf day, our group took it easy at the cabin with some grilling, poker, and scotch tasting. We prefer to stay in a VRBO with a lake view to have easy access to hiking and other non-golf outdoor activities (even if the lake is dried up right now). When there is water in the lake, you can paddleboard, canoe, kayak, and fish. Make sure to pick a vacation rental that will comfortably fit your group size. This is the VRBO that we used for the weekend.
For day 2, we checked out Oak Creek Canyon Country Club in Sedona, Arizona to golf under the famous red rocks. This course is about 30-40 minutes away from Munds Park and has amazing views.
Munds Park is a great way to escape the heat during Arizona summers or just to enjoy the outdoors – whether that’s golf, mountain biking, or just sitting on the deck drinking some beer. Have you been to Munds Park? What are your favorite things to do while you’re there?
