What’s a typical Portuguese coffee?
Portugal is known for its short and strong espresso, locally called a “bica” which comes from the phrase, “bebe isto com açúcar.” When coffee was first introduced to Portugal, café goers found it too bitter, so the first coffee shop put out a sign saying, “drink this with sugar.”

Best Cafés for Really Good Coffee in Lagos, Portugal
- Black & White for good coffees, pastries, and breakfast burritos/brunch
- This spot is known for their photo-worthy pastries and delicious specialty coffees. You can sit down at the restaurant side or grab a coffee and pastry to go on the take away side of Black and White. Expect a wait if you want a sit down meal here during the peak season. Waits can be extremely long, but that’s why they have the take away side as well!
- Everyday People for really good coffees and sandwiches
- Everyday People is located on the Marina side of Lagos. They’re known for satisfying coffee snobs from around the world while serving amazing cookies and sandwiches. They are also remote-worker & dog friendly!
- The Studio Coffee for good coffees
- The Studio Coffee has Lagos, Luz, and Funchal locations. They’re my favorite spot to treat myself to a nice cappuccino, slice of banana bread, and a good book. They’re also a very dog-friendly location.
- Indigo Bar for a café with a surfer vibe
- Indigo Bar is where you can find a lot of the visiting surfers that are staying in nearby hostels hanging out. They’ve got healthy options, unique coffees, cocktails, and a rooftop to enjoy the views of Lagos, Portugal.
- Abigail’s for vegan options and more unique coffees
- Abigail’s is one of the biggest cafés in Lagos with vegan and gluten free options in addition to their specialty coffees. This is one of the places where you can always find an iced coffee (not always an easy task in Europe).
- Alex | coffee wine brunch
- Alex offers specialty coffees, all-day brunch, and wine. It’s a great spot to spend a late morning and try some unique flavors, like their summer special mango iced latte. An added benefit? Dogs are allowed inside this air conditioned cafés, so it’s one of the most dog-friendly spots in town. It’s also remote-worker friendly, and you can usually find a couple people on their laptops in this modern café.
- London Tiger for the pups and the vibes
- London Tiger is in the heart of Old Town and has a cozy, colorful vibe that’s the perfect stop for a morning coffee, smoothie, sweet treats, brunch, or cocktail. This is another one of the most dog-friendly places in all of Lagos! You’ll find pups here all hours of the day, and the London Tiger team love spoiling them with treats.
- Family Hub Café for the littles
- This one is for the parents with young kids coming to Lagos, Portugal. Family Hub Café launched in 2026 as a place for parents and their littles to café with more engaging activities and play areas for the young children. Kids are welcome really anywhere in Portugal, but this café offers a bit more with group activities, toys, and more!
