1. Are Dogs Allowed on the Beach in Lagos, Portugal?
Short answer, yes, dogs are allowed on the beach… depending on the beach and the time of year.
Meia Praia: The Most Dog-Friendly Beach During Off Season
Meia Praia is a massive, wide sandy beach and usually the best option for dogs. Keep in mind where your dog can go depends on the time of year:
- October–April (off-season): Dogs are allowed
- Peak season: Dogs are allowed at the far end of the beach, past the boardwalk and Pôr do Sol, away from town (this is also the nude beach area)
We regularly take Ziggy and Ditto to Meia Praia and they absolutely love the space to run in the sandy walkable beach.

Praia da Batata: Less Dog-Friendly
- Smaller and more crowded
- You’ll occasionally see dogs, but it’s less ideal and usually not allowed
- Most dog owners prefer Meia Praia instead
General rule of thumb:

3. How Can My Dog Get an EU Pet Passport?
If you’re moving to Portugal or staying here a while and traveling from a non-EU country, an EU Pet Passport should be one of your first to-do items.
An EU Pet Passport allows your dog to travel freely within the EU without repeated vet checks. Plus — it’s adorable.

How to get an EU Pet Passport in Portugal:
- Visit a local vet (we use Pet Vet Lagos)
- Request an EU Pet Passport
- Your vet may need to re-administer a rabies vaccine if your current one doesn’t meet EU standards
The passport includes microchip information, vaccine records, and rabies status, making traveling with your dog significantly easier, especially if you’re hopping around Europe.
